Installing a handle bar Kill Switch

 Most of the Honda clones come with same wiring, a fan shroud mounted kill switch that is wired to the coil, a ground and the oil sending unit.

When installing a handlebar mounted kill switch there are a couple of ways to wire it. The ring terminal (in the picture below the wire is green, but it also might be black) goes to the ground, you can use the same ground the factory mounted switch uses. The main wire (in the picture below is black but might also be red) goes to the existing switch.

The factory provides a quick disconnect connection that you can plug your switch into (see below), but when you unplug the black wire (the one going to the silver box), you disable the low oil sending unit, now this is not a big deal if you are good about checking your oil, but if you want it to work, you need to unplug the black wire (shown below) and wire up a new male connector that has both the black wire coming from the oil sending unit and your black (or red) wire coming from your handlebar switch. If you are not worried about the oil sending unit, just plug your black (or red) wire coming from your handlebar switch into the connector that has the yellow & black wires connected to it (see below).

Personally, I don't mind disabling the oil sending unit, we didn't have those in the 70's and we don't need them now, just make sure to check your oil level before every ride.

The Mini Bike of the week: White & Red Taco 100B

 When I was 18 I bought a new 1989 Polaris Indy 400 snowmobile and it had a white, red and gray color scheme, ever since then I have really liked those colors together.

This Taco caught my eye, this was built when the 3rd owners of Taco tried to bring it back to life and opened up manufacturing in California.....their effort failed, but Taco is not dead. Go Power Sports now owns them.

Project Kick Starter 1: Douglas Wheel

 As part of our content we will try to bring you a project kick starter, these are kits that you can buy to build your own mini bike.

This one is from the folks at Douglas Wheel, they are selling the frame loops and forks. You would need to weld them together and come up with a neck, seat mounts, motor plate and rear axle mounts.

For the neck, just buy some 7/8" OD - 5/8" ID DOM tubing, the bronze bushings are available, which allow the use of a 1/2" bolt, which would be easy to source.

The motor plates are available.

For the brakes, you could buy this kit from an ebay seller, it is a weld together scrub brake kit, it includes the foot pegs.

The Mini Bike of the Week: Cheap Thrills

 

This little Micro-Bike is about as small of a mini-bike as can be built.

Using an RCF Micro frame, it crams a lot into a small space

These look like 4" wheels, with Stud on the front and a slick on the back. The brake works on the clutch drum and the gas tank sits out back.....no where else for it to go. The huge sprocket gets this thing moving quick but no doubt limits top speed.

Evel Knievel Tribute project part 2

 

After paint, I assembled the bike, I discovered the forks had mounting tabs that would be perfect for a number plate, so I bought a vintage Haro BMX oval number plate and printed up a larger version of the #1 logo. 

Here is the bike 90% complete.

and finished: I had a custom bicycle license plate made, it says "EVL SPIRT"

and the custom starter cover sticker.

I had to create a helmet to match, a Bell 500 open face with visor.

Note the "color me lucky" sticker, most, if not all of Evel's helmets had this logo. I also added a red rabbit's foot to my handle bars, another accoutrement that Evel always had with him.

First ride, my buddy dared me to ride to his house (about 5 miles away).

Evel Knievel Tribute project part 1

 I wanted to build a mini-bike, so I searched out one designed for larger riders, both for comfort and so I could fit my grandson on the bike with me.

I settled on the Rascal roller kit from Go Power Sports, I opted for the telescopic front forks. The kit came with tires and wheels (6" wheels), rear disc brake and all parts needed except the motor, clutch and chain.

I also opted for the solid steel wheels with the dirt track style tires

I added in one of their performance exhaust pipes that exit the center of the frame

Now for a theme, I saw this picture of a restored mini-bike tribute to Evel Knievel and knew I had to build one.

The kit was pretty straight forward, all I had to do was paint the frame and tank white, then come up with decals or custom paint work.

I used my skills as a graphic designer and created my own version of the Evel Knievel #1, the stars in a bar and a custom starter cover.

I found this graphic online and used it as the basis for the #1

I combined the mini-bike rider with the Evel logo from the "Evel Live" TV show where Travis Pastrana jumped the Ceaser's Palace Fountain. I changed it to "Evel Lives". I named the bike "the Evel Spirit"

I purchased a Harbor Freight Predator 212 motor, added the stage one kit (air & crank case filters) and removed the exhaust and gas tank.

I purchased this set of handlebars, they were a cross between cruiser and ape hangers, they fit perfect and made the bike comfortable to ride

I wanted to mix the parts in red or blue, since the frame was white, I bought this set of hand grips/throttle

I forget to take pictures when I unboxed the kit, but here is the fame during painting, everything was welded and there zero modifications necessary. Go Power Sports figured everything out for you.
