The Mini Bike of the Week: Rat Patrol

I named this one "Rat Patrol", the desert military flat paint gave it that vibe.

The frame looks like a vintage Bonanza Scout or maybe one of the reproductions from RCF? I like how they fabricated the tank to fit the contours of the frame. How about the bobber fender, acting as support for the seat, getting the rider as low as possible?

The Mini Bike of the Week: Tom Thumb

This Micro Bike has personality, maybe it is the headlight or the Mexican blanket seat, or perhaps the use of color on a bare metal frame?

Randy's Chopper-Bobber Project part 2

Randy wanted a rear fender and sissy bar like the RCF prototype had, so we bought some small round stock and Randy ordered a prepainted fender.

He also found a couple of Maltese/Iron crosses to mount to the sissy bar.

In the pictures below we are welding on the sissy bar and the mounts for the fender.

The chrome bolts and washers arrived.

Randy got the frame and forks painted and I started with the assembly, there was still some fab work and shimming to be done.

I made this little heat shield to protect the plastic torque converter case from the exhaust.

for those that don't know, the torque convertor cover needs to be cut out to allow the chain to get to the front sprocket. You need to allow for some chain slap, not much though as our chain is really short

For the exhaust I needed a way to support it, to prevent the flange from cracking where it mounts to the motor, the pipe came with some brackets, one of them fit the frame, I just drilled a small hole and used a sheet metal screw to attach it to the pipe

I ordered these cool clamps off Amazon, they fit the 1.25" spine and will hold the throttle cable and hydraulic brake line

I wanted to find a way to hang the crank case filter, so I found a rubber coated clamp, drilled a hole and mounted in under the seat.

The bike needed a kick stand and I had one of these kick stand mounts, but no kick stand or spring.

I took an old wrench, bent it with my torch, cut off the box end, welded a 1/4" bolt to the back and found a spring in my stash of parts.

Per tradition, Randy's wife bought him a gremlin bell, so I found a washer that was the right size, drilled a hole in it and painted it black

In the picture above you can see Randy bought some 7/8" handle bar grips and we installed them on the foot pegs, they provide good grip and are comfortable.

One of Randy's ideas was this little tool bag to mount on the front of the motor, filling up the empty space left by the original gas tank.

While Randy was painting the tank, I worked on the artwork for the tank stickers, we went through a couple of ideas and he decided on the flames

The tanks is done, decals applied we are ready to break in the motor.

Here we are filling the case with oil, 16oz.

The motor fired on the 3rd pull, we ran it for 15 min, then drained the oil and refilled it, time for the 1st ride!.......alas, there was a problem with the clutch, I had assembled the primary clutch improperly and had to take it apart and reassemble.

After the clutch was fixed we took it for the first ride, everything worked but we needed to adjust the throttle and back out the throttle stop screw (maybe just remove it).

Next post we will have detailed pictures of the finished (and polished) bike.
